Job Description

About Bunkerchain

Bunkerchain builds digital trust infrastructure for the maritime industry. Our flagship initiative, Marine Vessel Pass (MVP), is a ship-centric digital identity and digital stamp-and-sign system anchoredto the IMO number.

We work with ports, terminals, regulators, and data custodians to enable verifiable, auditable, and secure vessel identity and compliance workflows.

We are now embedding AI into trust-critical systems - carefully, responsibly, and at production scale.

Role Overview

We are hiring an AI Engineering Lead to become Bunkerchain's internal AI brain.

You will work alongside our existing systems architecture leadership to introduce AI capabilities into our platform without disrupting stability, security, or delivery timelines.

This role is about bridging AI innovation with production discipline - and helping evolve our engineering culture into an AI-augmented organization.

You are not here to rebuild everything. You are here to integrate intelligently.

What You'll Do

1. Architect AI Into Production Systems

  • Design and implement a scalable AI service layer that integrates cleanly into existing enterprise systems.
  • Establish patterns for: LLM integrations, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), Structured outputs and guardrails, AI API gateway architecture
  • Ensure AI systems meet production standards: reliability, monitoring, cost controls, and security.

2. Embed AI Into Trust-Critical Workflows

  • Introduce AI capabilities into digital identity and compliance processes.
  • Enhance document handling, anomaly detection, risk signals, and workflow efficiency.
  • Maintain strict separation between AI-generated insights and system-of-record data.
  • Design auditability and human-in-the-loop mechanisms where required.

3. Establish AI Standards & Governance

  • Define internal best practices for AI usage and deployment.
  • Implement logging, prompt versioning, and evaluation pipelines.
  • Monitor model performance, drift, hallucination risk, and cost.
  • Ensure AI outputs remain traceable and accountable.

4. Elevate Engineering Culture

  • Introduce AI-assisted development workflows.
  • Mentor engineers on responsible AI integration.
  • Help traditional engineering teams become AI-augmented builders.
  • Drive pragmatic adoption - not hype.

What We're Looking For

Core Experience

  • Experience in building production backend or platform systems.
  • Recent hands-on experience integrating modern AI/LLM capabilities into real products.
  • Strong understanding of: Large Language Models, RAG architectures, Embeddings and vector databases, AI failure modes and mitigation
  • Experience designing scalable APIs and distributed systems.
  • Comfortable operating at both architectural and hands-on coding levels.

Strongly Preferred

  • Experience working in regulated or compliance-driven environments.
  • Experience implementing AI systems with auditability and governance controls.
  • Experience introducing new technologies into established engineering teams.
  • Ability to influence without ego.

Who This Role Is For

This role is for someone who:

  • Thinks in systems, not just prompts.
  • Understands that AI is probabilistic and production systems are deterministic.
  • Knows when AI should not be used.
  • Can modernize without destabilizing.
  • Can influence culture without creating resistance.

Why Join

  • Build AI within real-world trust infrastructure.
  • Work at the intersection of AI, digital identity, and maritime systems.
  • High ownership and architectural impact.
  • Help shape the long-term technical DNA of the company.
