Role Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Scientist to join Bosch's Research and Development team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to explore the usage of AI and advanced solutions in the field of HVAC engineering and control. As an AI Control Research Scientist - Associate, you will collaborate with the research team, business units and external partners to develop cutting-edge technologies and commercialize innovative solutions, focusing on the domain of sustainability.

What you will do (Key Responsibilities)

  • Drive innovation in the area of Urban Solutions and Sustainability, particularly in the Sustainable HVACs domain, focusing on advanced control strategies using AI and machine learning.
  • Co-create with business units in relation to sustainability initiatives, contribute to the long-term product portfolio of Bosch, perform customer interviews, formulate problem statements, and generate innovation pitching and research proposals.
  • Develop and implement AI-based control algorithms for thermal systems such as HVACs and Heat Pumps to optimize for energy efficiency, user comfort, and grid stability.
  • Engage in model-based engineering for energy systems, relevant sensor technologies, data analytics, and laboratory activities, including the design of experiments for proof-of-concept and prototype development.
  • Build cooperation, assess, and identify Best-In-Class within local institutions and universities for potential research and innovation collaboration.
  • Regular alignment with Strategic Research Portfolio Owner, quarterly project review updates, stakeholder management, and idea pitching via the Bosch Innovation Framework.

Qualifications

What We're Looking For (Qualifications & Skills)

  • Min. Master or PhD degree in an Engineering field, specializing in Control Systems, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline with a thesis and projects focused on AI/ML applications for physical systems.
  • Working experience as an R&D engineer or academic staff in thermal system modeling, simulation, and control, with a proven track record of applying AI/ML for control research.
  • In-depth understanding of HVAC system physics and modern control theory (e.g., Model Predictive Control, Reinforcement Learning).
  • High awareness of the latest developments in AI for control and their application to energy systems, with the ability to translate research into functional prototypes for customer demonstration.
  • Experience with Python and relevant machine learning libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn).
  • Passion for innovation, an entrepreneurial spirit, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to work both independently and in a team, with a good working attitude and the ability to adapt in a dynamic environment.
