As anxiety plays a big part in this, you need to find a way to channel and reduce your inner fears. Instead of thinking of everything that could go wrong, it’s more productive and encouraging to think of why you would like to talk to the person, be a business interest, out of curiosity or simply because you’re interested in what the person has to say. A simple trick to keep your nerves calm is holding something in your hand, such as a pen or a glass or water. The question, “Can you tell me more about that?” is one you should use often.

Have go-to topics

Once in a while, you will be put into situations in which you may have nothing relevant to contribute or where you don’t know anyone else.
